Week Twelve: Chapter Twenty: The Spiral Dance of Symptom and Specter
The couple in the car is our hero-to-be, Ko, and his girlfriend, Satomi. After Ko sends Satomi home in a taxi, he discovers that someone had been watching them — the voyeur. And because he has not behaved as an object (that is, sexually), he feels justified in punching the guy out. But the voyeur turns the tables on him, telling him, ‘You’re no better than me — you wanted to have sex with her but pretended to be a gentlemen.’ In other words, now, being a subject is associated with ‘wanting to do it’ and ‘wanting to watch it.’
