Lecture Four: Chapter Six: Full Animation

Otsuka Yasuo has two tricks for imparting a strong sense of the energy, physical  weight, and ‘groundedness’ of a character within the animated world.  In the following clip, he explains how he envisions a boy picking up a hammer.

When characters use tools (the boy with the hammer), he draws the effects of the weight of the hammer on the boy, which gives a sense of the boy’s strength and energy, as well as a sense of gravity and natural laws of motion.
